Southern Cross of Honor identified to Pvt F. A Murrell. Murrell enlisted as a Private in company D (Edgefield Rifles), 14th Regiment South Carolina Infantry at 22 years of age. The 14th Infantry Regiment was organized in July 1861 near Columbia, South Carolina. The 14th moved to the South Carolina coast in October 1861. On January 1, 1862 the unit came under fire from Federal gunboats. The unit was ordered to Virginia in April 1862 and was assigned to Gregg's Brigade. They fought at Gaines Mill, Second Manassas, Shepardstown, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Deep Bottom, Fussell's Mill and Poplar Springs Church. The 14th South Carolina Infantry Regiment ended the war with 18 officers and 246 men. Pvt Murrell was wounded at Frazier's farm, June 1862. This Cross of Honor comes with a Southern Cross of Honor Certification, muster rolls from several time periods and a short narrative of the 14th South Carolina Infantry Regiment.
