Sharps 50/70 Conversion Carbine
Item #: AA682
A converted New Model Sharps, sometimes known as the Model 1868 in carbine version. After the Civil War the government wanted to convert it's percussion weapons to metallic cartridge breechloaders. The Sharps rifle and carbine were among those selected for conversion. In 1867 the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Co was awarded a contract to convert 31,098 carbines. The New Models 1859, 1863 and 1865 were all included in the conversion. The overall length of this carbine is 39", with a 22" barrel. The barrel has a bright 6 groove bore with no pitting, chambered in 50/70. All metal parts have an even dull grey patina. The walnut stock has taken on a dark brown appearance, showing a small nick or two here and there. According to specs for the conversion there is no patch box present on the stock and the butt plate is steel. The markings on the barrel are not visible. The lockplate has the C SHARPS PAT OCT 5TH 1852, R.S. LAWRENCE PAT APRIL 12TH 1859 on the right side. The frame is stamped C. SHARPS PATENT SEPT 12TH 1848. The saddle bar and ring are still reporting for duty. The rear sight stamp is R.S. LAWRENCE PATENTED FEB 15TH 1859. The front sight blade is made of German silver. Serial number C9913 is stamped on the receiver and barrel. This one could still be fired today. maybe not in anger, unless you get mad deer hunting! The Rebel dropped one last year using a carbine just like this one.
