A Grand Army of the Republic cap with history of coming from Pennsylvania. This one is brimless, and is made of black felt material, very similar to a beret in design. They were called pill box hats. It's trimmed with a 1 3/8" band of blue and gray material. There are two buttons marked NG and a 1 1/2" red disk embroidered with the letters NGV. The maker label in the lining of the hat is marked Horstmann Bros and Allien, 7 Bond St, New York. The Horstmann's and Allien were in business together from 1852 through 1876. The location however, puts this one between 1873 and 1876. The material is in very good condition. The 1 3/4" leather sweat band has a small tear below the right side button. The stitching has come loose in the back. Overall still in very good condition. If you collect GAR items this should fit well into your collection.
