Late 1800's kepi in the style of the French Chasseur cap. This one has no makers label or identifying marks of any kind. This style of cap was copied by the North and South during the Civil War. Not knowing the history of this one, I would venture to say that it belonged to GAR veteran. The cap measures 10 1/2" long, 4 1/4' high in the front and 5 1/2" high in the back. The top part is made of red wool while the bottom is black wool. There are three gold braided stripes sewn around the sides, with two stripes sewn down the front, back and each side. On the top of the hat is a single gold braid sewn around the perimeter and one single braid in the center in the shape of a clover. The chin strap is intact and has the same gold braid sewn over the leather, retained by two plain buttons. The brim is in good condition, but is partially separated from the body of the cap. There is no sweat band, the cardboard stiffener for the sides is damaged and partially missing.
