Buff leather carbine sling from the civil war era. This one is complete with brass buckle, bat wing with all four brass rivets, swivel and snap hook. The sling is shorter than regulation, measuring only 52 1/2" instead of 56". The snap hook is stamped O.B. North and Co. New Haven Ct. North was awarded contracts to produce a total of 29,000 of them between May 1864 and June 1865. The metal has taken on a mottled gray patina, with a little bright spot here and there. The leather is still pretty supple. It looks as though this one was stored some place where some small rodent had access to it. there are two places on the back side of the sling that appear to have been chewed on. The last photo shows this. If you collect Civil War or Indian War Cavalry you should check this one out.
