Extremely rare excavated Confederate lance head recovered from the site of the Potter raid near Middleton, South Carolina. Brigadier General Edward Potter was dispatched by General Sherman to destroy railroad locomotives, rolling stock and supplies that had been moved and hidden on the South Carolina R.R and the Wilmington & Manchester R.R. Sherman quantified the importance of the mission with the statement "Those cars and locomotives should be destroyed if to do it costs you 500 men." BGN Potter's consolidated Division was composed of two infantry brigades and auxiliary troops numbering 2700 soldiers. Potter's men located the hidden railway equipment and burnt it all on the tracks. This is the only known South Carolina lance head known to be recovered from that area. The lance head measures 19 1/2" long and 1 1/2" at the widest point. It has been preserved to prevent any further deterioration. this one was in Bill Adam's collection at one time. It came to the shop from the Lee Hadaway collection, author of the book "The Updated Confederate Bowie Knife Guide". If you collect excavated artifacts or Confederate edged weapons here's an opportunity to pick up a rare one at a great price.
