French Model 1777 socket bayonet from the Revolutionary War period. The overall length is 18", with the blade measuring 15" and the socket 2 5/8". The shouldered section of the blade has three "poincons", or inspector stamps. There are also two more stamps, one on each shank. I have spent several hours trying to decipher their meaning but have had no luck. The inspector marks on the shoulder of the blade are a B, an S in a recessed oval and what appears to be the symbol *. On the left shank is a star over letter C in a recessed oval. The right shank has the letter 42 in a recessed oval stamp. Someone has also written in red paint pen E63 on the socket. This can be easily removed. This model revolutionized bayonets, as it used a captive locking ring at the mid point of the socket, ensuring a positive contact between the socket and muzzle of the musket. Nothing like charging a fixed position and see your bayonet fall off just as you crest the parapet! The pattern of bayonet was copied world wide and would be utilized well into the late 19th century. This one has keep cleaned and has an overall bright appearance. If you collect the Revolutionary period this one is for you!
