Indian wars era militia Shako style hat with infantry buttons. It measures 5 3/4" tall at the highest point and 9 1/2" long from brim to the back of the body. The body is black and shows just a little wear. The tarred leather top has flaking and wear on 2/3 of the rim. The brim is present, but has been reattached and is not a period repair. The leather loop securing the free end of the chin strap is broken. This one did not come with a Pom Pom, which should have been light blue to coincide with the Infantry buttons. The makers label in the top of the hat is in near mint condition. This one was made by John C.F. Deecken of New York City when he was located at 160 Grand Street. The soldiers name and rank are written in period ink on the label and appears to read Wm Toll, PVT. Mr Deecken operated from this location from 1872 through 1878, dating the Shako to this time period. Still a pretty nice display item for the price.
