Grand Army of the Republic waist belt plate with a part of the original belt. The plate measures 3" wide and 1 7/8" tall. The Grand Army of the Republic was the largest veteran's organization after the Civil War, representing former soldiers that fought in the Union Army. This organization was modeled after the military and observed many of the customs and ceremonies of the military, to include uniforms. This GAR belt is made in the style of the Model 1851 sword belt plate utilized predominately by the Union, but also by the Confederate forces. This belt plate is in good condition with most of the gilt remaining.
