A letter from private James Ellis of Company G, 10th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, to his wife Lydia in Grant county Wisconsin. The letter describes his unit's involvement in the Battle of Stones River. The 10th Wisconsin joined the fighting on December 31st and remained in it until January 4th 1863. He states that his unit was in support of a battery of artillery and that at times the fighting was desperate. "There were a great many killed on both sides", he said. Ellis refers to the Confederate forces as "Secesh", and says "Sunday they left in a hurry". He goes on to tell his wife that "our regiment didn't lose but a few in killed and wounded although we were nearly surrounded". A very unique part of the this letter is the envelope. Ellis reused an envelope that he had received mail in to send his letter. If you collect Civil War documents or letters this is one you don't want to miss.
