An engraved CDV of Lieutenant John L Worden, commander of the USS Monitor during the Civil War. Worden was a career Naval officer, serving from 1834 until 1886 when he retired as a Rear Admiral. He was a Navy Lieutenant who was in command of the Monitor during the Battle of Hampton Roads. This was the first battle between ironclad ships, pitting the USS Monitor against the CSS Virginia. After a four hour duel both ships retired from the fight, neither being able to penetrate the other's armor. Lieutenant Worden was wounded in the face during the battle. Four US Navy ships have been named after him, and the parade field at the US Naval Academy is named in his honor. This engraved CDV was made at the studio of Elias Dexter located at 562 Broadway, New York, New York. We currently have two of these, both in very good condition. They have no been trimmed and have no damage. The only marks on the backs are in pencil and seem to be catalog numbers and possibly prices. If you are a Naval collector you should not be missing this important piece from your collection.
