A Model 1905 Navy officer's dress belt and plate. The belt plate is listed in O'Donnel and Campbell's book "American Military Belt Plates" as plate 1022. The belt and plate were both made in London by the Joseph Starkey company. Starkey is listed in the book "Military Goods Dealers & Makers 1785 - 1915" by Bazelon & McGuinn as manufacturer of Army and Navy appointments in 1859. The company advertised as "actual manufacturers of gold lace and USN equipment of the highest quality" as late as 1927. The one piece buckle is back marked J. STARKEY / 23 CONDUIT ST / LONDON. The belt is embossed in gold lettering JOSEPH STARKEY / MANUFACTURER / 23 CONDUIT ST / LONDON. The belt is 36" long and 1 1/2' wide. There are two leather sword drops that measure 27" in length and 13" in length. The leather is in excellent condition and shows moderate wear along the top edge. It is still very pliable and could be worn today. It would certainly dress up your early 1900's Naval mannequin!
