Model 1855 Saber Bayonet Frog Update!!
Item #: AA498
After further research I believe that this frog could be an 1866 French bayonet frog. I do not want to represent this item as something that it may not be, as I found an example of a French frog that looks very much like the one pictured here while researching another item. I have also seen an 1855 frog converted to what you see in this write up. As there are no makers stamps or inspector marks it is almost impossible to say for sure. Just wanted to let you know what I found out. Riflemans Model 1855 saber bayonet scabbard frog. This frog is slightly different in construction than most of this model. Instead of having the two individual belt loops this one has an extra piece of leather stitched in joining the two. Not sure if this was done as a repair or soldier modification. Either way, it is a period repair or innovation. It measures 10 1/4" tall, 5 1/2" wide at the belt loops and 2 1/2" wide at the bottom. The black bridle leather is in excellent condition. All stitching is very strong and the scabbard strap and roller buckle are intact. Great example of an early war bayonet accessory that is very hard to find.
