American cartridge box from the Revolutionary War period circa 1775 - 1820. The box measures 8 3/4" long, 2 1/2" wide and 3 3/4" tall. The wooden block measures 8 1/2" long, 2 3/8" wide and 2 15/16" high. There are 24 holes in the block, 2 rows of 10 and 1 row of 4. The block is fitted to the sewn leather box, and also held in place by brass brads. The box and wooden block are curved, indicating it was intended to be worn as a waist box. All stitching is strong on the leather, to include the 2 belt loops on the rear. The leather is still very flexible, but does have some crazing and flaking on the overhanging front flap. To be a couple hundred years old, it's not that bad! Under the front flap is a stitched on accessory pocket. The flap is held down by a triangular iron closure tab. Examples of this box are shown in Neumann and Kravic's book "Collectors Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution" figures 22 and 28, pages 69 and 72. These are rare to come by on the market. If you're a collector of America's War for Independence this one is for you!
