Excavated Gutterback frame buckle recovered from the Brandy Station battlefield area. Solid cast brass frame buckles were the most common issued to Confederate enlisted men. Manufactured in various styles by several manufacturers, the ones with the integral cast tongues survived battlefield conditions better than other styles. This plate holds it's original shape, with only a slight twist. File marks can be seen at the edges, a sure sign of Confederate manufacture. On the front of the buckle opposite the gutterbacks are the initials J W. This was common trait among Confederate soldiers, as they put their initials on rifles, pistols, swords, canteens. Times were lean and hard, and they meant to make sure they kept what they had! Who knew when a replacement item would come along. This belt plate comes with a Letter of Authenticity from Stephen Sylvia, owner of J.S. Mosby Antiques and Artifacts. Your Confederate collection should not be without this one!
