Excavated US cartridge box plate, unknown excavation location. The plate is maker marked Boyd & Sons Boston. They had a contract for 9000 infantry accoutrements from Oct 1862 - Nov 1863. The plate measures 3 1/2" wide by 2 1/4" high and is in good condition, although it does have two areas that have been struck. There is a cut almost dead center at the top of the plate approximately 1/4" long. Along the inside edge of the U is a gouge approximately 1/2" long, but does not go all the way through. The plate holds it's original shape, has a beautiful chocolate brown patina and both hooks are present. On the back of the plate is a collectors mark or catalog number that possibly holds the key to where this plate went to ground. In modern ink on the back are the letters LGHI and the date 2-10-78. this one will make a nice addition to your excavated collection.
