Excavated plain rectangular sheet brass buckle. This buckle is pre war militia or possibly Confederate made. Measuring 3 1/4' wide by 2 1/4" high, these buckles were inexpensive and easy to manufacture. Many buckles similar to this example were issued to southern militia units prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. The iron wire hooks that were soldered to the back of the buckle are missing. An example of this buckle can be found in Steve Mullinax's book "Confederate Belt Buckles & Plates" as plate 165. A nice addition to your excavated or buckle collection.
