USN Cartridge Box

United States Navy cartridge box from the Civil War era. This box has been extensively modified by the sailor/soldiers that utilized it. The two belt loops have been removed and replaced with one wide single loop. Two brass loops have been hand sewn on either side of the box at the top to accommodate a sling. The brass closure finial is present but the closure tab is broken. The ammunition tins have been removed. The left side of the cover has come unstitched. At some point a US cartridge box plate has been applied to the box. The embossed USN has been protected by the brass plate, indicating it was applied long ago. The leather remains in good condition with no tears or damage. A unique piece of military history that would make a nice addition to your collection.
