This is an application form for membership in Auxiliary #6 of the William H Erwin Camp #7, United Spanish War Veterans. The form measure 5 1/2" wide and 8 1/4" high. It is in very good condition for the age of the document. The Auxiliary of the United Spanish War Veteran was the same in purpose and organization as the auxiliaries of the Grand Army of the Republic. The USWV auxiliaries were made up of women that were related to veterans of the Spanish American War. The membership form states the objects of the auxiliary are to perfect and maintain local, state and national organizations, extend aid and sympathy to all soldiers, sailors and marines of the Spanish American War and their dependents, to cooperate with the USWV in all their work and social functions, to promote patriotism, humanity and a proper reverence for the flag, to teach all love of country, to promote interest in the national institutions, to encourage observance of all patriotic days, and to inculcate everywhere and at all times lessons in good citizenship. The eligibility requirements were to be a female relative of a Spanish American War Veteran at least 14 years old, or nurses and patriotic women who were engaged in relief work during the Spanish American War. This application was made for Harriet A. Warren of Kansas. She was eligible through the service of Clarence E. Warren who served in E Company 21st Kansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment. This small document will display well in an acrylic case in any USWV collection.
