It has been turned on a lathe and is extremely well done. The glass ink well inside is not broken. The top of the removeable top in stamped 5/Me./INF. The 5th Maine Infantry Regiment was organized in Portland, Maine and mustered into service 24 June, 1861. This was a hard fought Union regiment that saw action at First Bull Run, West Point, Gaines Mill, Goldings Farm, Malvern Hill, Crampton's Gap, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Rappahannock Station, Locust Grove, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. It was mustered out of service on 27 July, 1864, having captured six Confederate battle flags and more prisoners than it carried on it's own rolls.
