Three .58 Caliber Minie Bullets Recovered in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana

This is a set of three bullets recovered on private property in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, in an area where the Siege of Port Hudson took place between 22 May and 9 July, 1863. The siege took place between the XIX Union Corps commanded by Major General Nathaniel Banks and the Confederate Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana commanded by Major General Franklin Gardner. During the 48 day siege the Union forces mounted two attacks against the fortifications at Port Hudson, both being repulsed by the Confederate forces. Not until the surrender of Vicksburg did the Union forces manage to control of Port Hudson. With the surrender of Port Hudson, the Union had control of the Mississippi River. During the siege the Union forces suffered 707 men killed in action, 3336 wounded, 319 missing and 5000 died from disease. The Confederate casualties were 750 killed or wounded, 250 died of disease and 6340 were surrendered. This battle was considered a Union victory. These three .58 caliber bullets are in dropped condition and were recovered on private property.
