This is a US World War II M1 helmet and liner. The shell was manufactured by the McCord Radiator company, the liner was made by Westinghouse. The heat stamp is no longer visible on the shell, but it is a front seam fixed bale shell made early on, as it has the stress cracks so prominent in the early McCord shells. The helmet has a khaki appearance, and has been repainted at least twice. It looks to be a post war repaint, with the color on the shell also being on the metal part of the chin straps. The cork texturing is all but gone from the exterior of the helmet. The helmet shell has several small dents along the top. There are multiple stress cracks in the shell, mostly in the rear. The stainless steel band around the rim retains the majority of the paint. The rim has a front seam stainless steel band. The chin strap bails are fixed. The chin straps are not WWII period. The Westinghouse liner is from mid 1944 to end of war production. The Westinghouse stamp is clearly visible in the inside top of the liner. The liner has not been repainted a dark green, with at least a couple of coats of paint on the exterior. The liner is missing the sweatband and nape strap. There are no cracks on the liner. The suspension cloth is cotton and khaki in color. It is retained to the liner by metal A washers painted green. The suspension system shows two different laundry numbers. The cotton suspension is missing along the front three A washers. The garters for the liner chin strap are both present. The liner chin strap is present, but is broken in half. This liner never had A yokes installed, as it was not intended for airborne use. It has a 28th Division insignia on the left side, and a shadow of a regimental insignia on the right side. The front of the liner has a black eagle from the Great Seal emblem on it. This is indicative of a post war practice by occupation troops. While it has undergone a few upgrades, this is a WWII shell and liner that will fit into most any collection.
