This is a Springfield Model 1871 Rolling Block US Army rifle. They were manufactured at the Springfield Armory on royalty agreement with the Remington Arms Company between 1871 and 1872. During the two year run there was a total production of 10001 rifles, making this a pretty uncommon piece. This .50 caliber centerfire rifle has no serial numbers and was manufactured in 1872. It has an overall length of 52", with a barrel length of 36". The barrel exterior has a very smooth exterior and at some point has had a very light coat of lacquer applied to it. The barrel has taken on a dull steel gray patina. The bore is as bright as the day it was made, and shows excellent rifling with no pitting present. There are no stamps or proof marks anywhere on the barrel. The breech is stamped with an eagle/U.S/SPRINGFIELD/1872 on the right side and MODEL 1871 on the left side. The tang is stamped REMINGTONS PATENT/PAT MAY 3d NOV 15th 1864 APRIL 17th 1868. The hammer and rolling block action both have coarse checkering on the spur. The rear sight is is graduated out to 900 yards. The front sight is original to the gun, being a pinched type that also serves as a bayonet lug. The trigger guard has been provisioned for a sling swivel. The trigger has a smooth surface. The iron butt plate is stamped US and does not have a trap door. The two barrel bands are the non clamping type retained by springs like those found on 1861 Springfield rifle muskets and are stamped with the small u. The front and rear sling swivels are still present, as well as the correct two shoulder cleaning rod. The two piece stock is walnut and has not been sanded or refinished. The ESA cartouche is worn, but still legible on the left stock flat. There are no cracks or major wood loss anywhere on the stock. The wood has taken on a nice dark brown appearance. There are the usual bumps and dings from handling during service, but this gun has not been abused. This is an overall fine example of a scarce Springfield firearm made in cooperation with the Remington Arms Company and will compliment any firearms collection.
