This is a United States Marine Corps Pattern 1917 winter tunic and cold weather cap from World War I. This forest green, wool, 5 button tunic is in fantastic condition! All stitching is tight and unbroken. There is some very light moth damage in a couple of spots, but no rips, tears or stains anywhere. Stenciled on the left sleeve lining is the stamp "Quartermaster Depot/U.S. Marine Corps./1918-1920. The original WWI Marine Corps eagle and anchor buttons are found on the front of the tunic. Each of the four pockets, as well as the shoulder epaulettes, have the smaller eagle and anchor buttons. There are two Marine Corps Eagle Globe and Anchor emblems on the collar. They date to the 1920's. The epaulettes have the crossed stitching at the shoulder seam, identifying this tunic as being an enlisted mans uniform. The lining of the body is of a greenish color, while the sleeve linings are of an off white color. There is no insignia sewn on either sleeve, but there is shadowing of Corporal's insignia having been sewn on each sleeve. There is also thread remaining inside the sleeve lining in the shape of a Corporal insignia. The overseas cap that came with the tunic is a cold weather style. On the front of the cap there are supposed to be two cuff sized eagle and anchor buttons to retain the flaps in the up position. Unfortunately they are missing, but if I can locate a set will have them sewn on to restore the cap. Currently there is a WWII period bakelite collar EGA on the left side of the cap. I believe that this is a WWI period uniform that saw continued service after the war, and saw upgrades through the 1920's until the wearer either left the Marine Corps or saw a new uniform replace this one. Either way, both pieces have survived well and display great together or on their own.
