This is a nine button company grade officer's frock coat from the Indian Wars period. The coat is in extremely good condition, having no insect damage anywhere. The black material has not faded or degraded in any way. The construction of this frock suggests it is a private purchase rather than a government issue. The sleeves do not have the balloon flair at the elbows, but are the same width from the shoulder to the cuff. The skirts measure 17" in length and are machine hemmed. The collar is 1 1/8" and shows practically no wear. The collar is closed by a single closure hook at the bottom of the collar. A section of crushed velvet material has been hand stitched to the inside of the collar for comfort. The front of the single breasted coat has 8 General Service buttons, one is missing. None of the buttons are back marked. All the buttons have the eagle facing to the right. Each non functioning cuff has three General Service buttons, three with no back mark and three back marked Extra Quality. On the back of the frock are two more General Service buttons, neither are back marked. There is one exterior pocket and two interior pockets. The exterior pocket is a small watch sized pocket sewn into the seam of the right waist line near the bottom eagle button. The interior pockets consist of a vertical one on the inner left breast and a horizontal one on the inner right breast. There is evidence of a tag having been sewn into the collar lining, but it is no longer with the coat. The vents also have a pocket each. The pockets are lined with brown muslin cotton. The interior of the coat shows more of the quality craftsmanship that went into it. The body of the coat is lined with a black polished cotton in a quilted pattern. The sleeves are lined with off white cotton ticking with blue stripes. There is no evidence that shoulder straps were ever stitched on the shoulders. All the panel seams are tightly stitched together, and show no signs of hand stitched repairs. The bottom of the coat is machine hemmed. I believe this is a private purchase frock coat from the early Indian Wars period that was never worn by the officer, possibly medical, that it was intended for.
