This is a Japanese tropical Type 98 combat tunic used during World War II. The Type 98 combat uniform was introduced in 1938, and evolved as the war went along. This is a third pattern Type 98 tunic, as there are no buttons for the side vent openings. The olive cotton material is in very good condition, showing no rips, tears or moth damage. There is some very light staining on the right and left chest areas, mostly on the right side. All of the stitching is still very tight and unbroken. The single breasted five button front has all five dark olive steel buttons securely attached. The two pocket buttons are of the dark olive metal type as well. This tunic does not have the belt loop on the left side. The under arm vents are not frayed or torn. The rank of First Class Private is sewn on the collar. The bandage pocket inside the tunic is still intact. The ink stamp on the inside of the unlined tunic is very legible, unfortunately I can't read Japanese! I will provide an update as soon as I can get the tag translated. There is also a small patch on the left sleeve that I have not been able to identify. This is a nice condition Japanese enlisted tunic that would look great in a WWII Pacific theater display!
