This is a Nepalese copy of a Sharps Model 1853 slant breech rifle. A large cache of the these weapons were found in Kathmandu, Nepal and imported to the US many years ago. It has been suggested that these weapons were originally manufactured in Georgia during the later years of the war, but there has been no conclusive evidence discovered to verify that. This copy of the Sharps Model 1853 rifle measures 57" overall, with a 40 1/4" round barrel. The exterior of the barrel has a smooth, bright finish with virtually no pitting or other blemishes. The bore is turning dark, but shows good rifling with very light pitting scattered about. The bore gauges at .56 caliber. The only marking on the entire gun are found on top of the barrel just to the rear of the long range rear sight, and look to be 228. The three barrel bands have a slightly darker patina than the barrel, with the front band having a sling swivel. The bands are retained by band springs. The long range rear sight is not stamped with any yardage graduations. The front sight is a block type that could double as a bayonet lug for a socket bayonet. The receiver and hammer have a patina that matches the barrel. There are no markings found anywhere on the receiver. The mechanics of the gun work fine, with the hammer holding at half and full cock. Occasionally the breech block wants to stick in battery when attempting to move the cocking lever down. The rear sling swivel attaches to the cocking lever pivot pin. This one even has a nipple protector attached by chain to the rear sling swivel. The butt plate and nose cap are polished brass, and have a bright appearance that matches the rest of the weapon. The dark two piece wood stock is in good condition, showing no cracks or major wood loss. There are the usual bumps and dings from handling, but the barrel channel remains very crisp. Overall the gun is in very good condition. Whether or not this is a Confederate manufactured weapon remains to be proven. But one thing is for certain, it is an unusual piece that will add to your percussion rifle collection.
