This is a tin lapel pin made in the early 1900's, inspired by a song called "How'd You Like to be the Ice Man". The song was written by a composer from Kentucky named J. Fred Helf in 1899. Pop culture of the time had people believing that the ice delivery men were rich and had women falling all over them. This was part in due to the fact that most ice men of that period were extremely physically fit. They had to be, lugging around blocks of ice weighing anywhere from 25 to 100 pounds. Often times, after the ice was delivered it had to be chipped in order to get it to fit in the ice box. Afterwards, the lady of the house may have offered the ice man a snack or drink, further leading to the myth of the ice man! This small tin pin is made up of a hanger and a pair of miniature ice tongs. The hanger measures 1 1/2" across and the pin is 1 3/4" high. On the hanger is the phrase "HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE THE ICE MAN?". There are three of these available, one has a small "block of ice" in the tongs. If you collect early Americana this will fit right in!
