This is an excavated 6 pound solid shot cannonball from the Civil War. It measures 3.40" in diameter and weighs 6.2 pounds. This type projectile was meant to be fired from a 6 pound smoothbore cannon. It has not been cleaned or preserved since being excavated. The entire surface has a light crust of rust, but the sphere is very solid. This is the fourth artillery projectile to come out of a Missouri collection. This projectile was excavated on private property in Douglas County, Missouri. The Battle of Clark's Mill took place on 7 November, 1862. Union forces, under the overall command of Captain Hiram Barstow, were defeated by Confederate forces under the command of Brigadier Generals John Burbridge and Colton Greene. The battle had relatively few casualties, with the Confederates suffering 34 killed in action and an unknown number wounded. The Union forces suffered 9 killed in action, 37 wounded and the entire command of 10th Illinois Cavalry and Missouri state militia captured. The Union prisoners were paroled and burnt the blockhouse Clark's Mill. These type projectiles were used by both the North and South. Here's an opportunity to own an early war projectile at a reasonable price.
