This is an unidentified campaign chest from the 113th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The 113th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Hancock, near Chicago, Illinois. The regiment mustered in for three years of service on 1 October, 1862, under the command of Colonel George Hoge. They were assigned to the Western theater of operations and saw action at the battle of Chickasaw Bayou, the Battle of Arkansas Post, the Yazoo Pass Expedition, the Battle of Port Gibson, the Battle of Champion Hill, the Siege of Vicksburg and the Battle of Brice's Cross Roads. During their 3 years of service the 113th Illinois Infantry Regiment suffered 303 casualties. Six enlisted men from the regiment earned the Medal of Honor during the Siege of Vicksburg. This campaign chest is in it's untouched original condition. It is as solid and sturdy as the day it was built. The chest measures 18" wide, 10" high and 14" deep. The regimental number 113 is stenciled on the top, front, both sides and inside of the lid. On the inside of the lid the name Bill Shipton is written, but I can find no information on him. This is a fantastic piece of Civil War history.
