This is a Model 1861 Springfield rifle musket that has been cut down to carbine length. Both the barrel and stock have been shortened, and now has an overall length of 35" with a 19" barrel. The exterior of the barrel has a smooth surface, with the exception of the breech and bolster area. There is moderate pitting and pinpricking in those areas. Only traces of the National Armory Bright finish remain, with the majority of the barrel showing a mix of plum and brown patina. The bore is dark and shows patches of rust, dirt and pitting along the entire length of the barrel. The bore gauges out at .62 caliber and shows no visible rifling. The bolster still has a clean out screw and the left barrel flat is stamped V, P eagle head. The lock plate and hammer have a patina matching the barrel. The lock is marked U.S./SPRINGFIELD with a spread winged eagle forward of the hammer and dated 1861 to the rear of the hammer. The mechanics of the lock are strong and function normally. There are no sights on the barrel, but a rear sight groove has been filed into the rear barrel band. The trigger guard shows a little more of the National Armory bright finish, but still has a patina that matches the rest of the gun. The rear sling swivel is missing from the trigger bow. The iron butt plate is stamped US on the tang and has the same dark patina of the rest of the gun. A saddle bar and ring have been added to the left stock flat. The only remaining barrel band, the rear one, is the clamping type found on Type II 1861 Springfield's. The stock has been cut back to match the barrel length, but still shows the ramrod channel. It has not been sanded or refinished. There are no major cracks or areas of wood loss on the stock. Someone even took the time to cut a piece of wood to fill in the rear barrel band retaining spring slot in the wood! Stamped into the belly of the stock just forward of the trigger guard is the letter O or Q, I can't quite make it out for sure. This stamp looks to be a little smaller than the ones used by Confederate arsenals to mark captured weapons that had been inspected, repaired and put back into service. This cutdown Springfield has a cool look about it, and should display well in you Civil War carbine or Springfield rifle collection!
