This is a Model 1840 Non Commissioned Officers sword from the Civil War era. The sword has an overall length of 38", with a blade length of 32 1/4". It has a 30 3/4" fuller and a width of 13/16". The blade has a nice even steel gray patina with scattered age spots. The obverse ricasso is stamped US/AHC/1862 and the reverse is stamped Made by/AMES Mfg Co/CHICOPEE/MASS. The hilt is brass and has a cast brass grip. Both of the guards are extended and rigid. The obverse side of the knucklebow is stamped with ADK. The brass has taken on a dull mustard patina. Only the top 7" of the scabbard survived with this sword. The only thing that remains is the top brass mount and about 3" of the leather. The brass on the scabbard matches the hilt perfectly. This is an overall good condition sword, but could use a new scabbard, perfect for the beginning collector.
