This is a Spanish espada ancha bowie knife from the late 1800's. Espada ancha means wide sword, and pertained to the characteristics of swords found in Northern Mexico and what is now the Southwestern United States. This Spanish bowie knife has an overall length of 16", with a blade length of 11 3/8". The blade measures 1 1/2" wide at the ricasso. The blade has a very sharp edge, even though it doesn't appear to have been sharpened in a long time. The iron two branch guard has a patina that matches the blade perfectly. The grip is polished bone, and has several cracks that run from one end of the grip to the other. That being said, the grip is very stable. It has tow brass ferrules, one on each end of the grip. They, along with the brass pommel cap, have a dark mustard patina. There is a narrow strip of rawhide wrapped around the grip just behind the ferrule near the guard. The peen on the tang is undisturbed. Overall this espada ancha bowie is in very good condition. It would look great displayed along with the late 1800's Mexican Cavalry saber listed on the site!
