These type of "Suicide Specials" were manufactured form the 1870's through the 1890's. The serial # of 5480 puts this one being manufactured in the early 1870's. The serial number is stamped on the bottom of the barrel, on the back of the cylinder and on the left side of the frame. All three stamps are very legible. This little pocket pistol measures 7 1/2" in overall length, with a barrel length of 3 1/4". The top of the frame is stamped "HOPKINS & ALLEN M'F'G CO/PAT. MCH 28 71 MAY 27. 79" on one side and "32 CAL RIMFIRE BLUE JACKET No. 2" on the other. The brass blade front sight is fixed. This 5 shot revolver has a spur trigger. The cylinder is fluted and is not stamped. The gun was originally silver plated, with the majority of the plating remaining. The gun has some elaborate engraving, with a floral design on both sides of the barrel, cylinder and frame. In addition to the floral designs, a man paddling a canoe with either mountains or rocks in the background is engraved on the left rear of the frame. The ivory grips are in good condition, having no cracks or chips. The mechanics of this little firearm operate perfectly. These little pocket pistols were popular with the river boat gamblers and others with less than honorable intentions! This one displays well, and will enhance any pistol collection.
