William Read Cutdown 12 Gauge Double Barrel Shotgun

This is a cut down Birmingham, England made 12 gauge double barrel shotgun retailed by William Read of Boston, Massachusetts. It's a beauty too, measuring an overall length of 34 1/4". The barrels are 18 1/4" and gauge out just at 12. The bores are a little dark, but look like they will clean up fine with little to no pitting. The bottom of the barrels have the Birmingham proof marks and W. ELLIS stamped on each barrel. The exterior of the barrels display great, having a dark plum patina. The top barrel rib is stamped WILLIAM READ BOSTON within an ornately engraved banner. Both lock plates are stamped WILLIAM READ, BOSTON and have simple floral etchings, along with the hammers. The mechanics of both locks work perfectly, holding the hammers in half and full cock. The trigger guard and butt plate both have a dark appearance, matching the barrels perfectly. The trigger guard and butt plate are embellished with more ornate floral etchings. The stock is solid, but does have a repair to the wrist. It looks to have been cracked, if not completely broken. The repair has been well executed and the stock seems to have full integrity. There are no cracks in the stock anywhere. It looks as though the original finish has worn off in some of the more highly handled areas. The simple checkering in the wrist area is still very clearly defined, but shows honest wear from handling. The same can be said for the forearm, where the wear is more substantial. A small German silver disk in the bottom of the stock comb and the escutcheon plates also have that aged patina that only comes from years of use. The wooden ram rod is still reporting for duty. Overall, the gun is in very good condition. We had a William Read shotgun that was still full length that had a bayonet lug fitted to the barrel at one time. So these were definitely around during the Civil War, this could be one that was cut down for Cavalry use.
