This is a 2nd pattern German M1898/05 bayonet with scabbard used in World War I. The blade on this bayonet has been cut down from it's normal length of 14 1/2" to 10". The blade and all hardware on the bayonet have a matching dull steel patina. The bayonet release button is functional. The incised wooden grips are in good condition, showing wear from obvious use. The wooden grips are retained by spanner and screw hardware. The obverse ricasso of the bayonet is not stamped, while the reverse ricasso is stamped WAFFENFABRII/MAUSER A.G./OBERNDORF a.N. The spine is stamped with the proof marks of a crown, W,17 and another crown, representing the year 1917 and Prussia. The guard is stamped with the number 2940 on the reverse, the obverse stamps have been stamped over with an X, and I can't tell what is under the four x's. The flash guard for the grips is still present on the spine of the bayonet. I'm not sure what model the metal scabbard is, but I believe it's a cutdown 1898/05 one. It has numerous dents on both sides, and has been painted black. The scabbard throat is retained by a single side screw that is missing. This bayonet with scabbard is possibly one that was sold to the Turks in the 1920's, where it normally would have been cut down and stamped with Arabic numbers on the cross guard for a serial number. It's one of those you need if you an example of every German manufactured M1898/05 bayonet!
