This is a Type V Grand Army of the Republic membership medal. From it's inception in 1866, the membership medal for the GAR underwent several changes. This medal, known as the Type V, was the final change made in 1886. The die for the medallion was recut to incorporate Sheridan's and Wilson's Cavalry Corps, as well as Hancock's First Veteran Corps. The badge is made up of a header, a ribbon made like the American flag and the GAR Medallion itself. The header consists of a spread winged eagle perched atop crossed cannons, with several cannon balls under the cannon tubes. The ribbon is constructed like the American flag, with red and white stripes and a blue canton with stars. The medallion is the same as the original on the face, the only difference being the corps badges on the reverse. The back of the header has the patent dates of May 14, 1886 and June 22, 1886 over amess kettle suspended over a fire. The header and medallion have a beautiful, aged patina. The ribbon has been repaired where it attaches to the header, and has a small teat on the back side. It still displays well, and will compliment any GAR collection.
