This is a Model1873 Springfield Trapdoor rifle that has been cut down. This 45/70 rifle, serial number 47001 falls into the 1875 production year. Both the barrel and stock have been shortened, and now has an overall length of 35 1/4" with a 19" barrel. The original 1873 stock has not been sanded or refinished. The butt has not been drilled to accept any cleaning rods or gun tools. The script P in a circle at the base of the trigger guard is very strong. The ESA cartouche on the left side of the stock faint, but still visible. The breech block assembly is marked U.S./MODEL/1873. The case hardening and oil quenching have resulted in a nice blueish gray patina. The lock plate sits flush with the stock, is not beveled and is marked U.S./Springfield/1873 with an Eagle to the left of Springfield. It has a first type, coarse knurled hammer and a two position tumbler. The sights are correct for an early production trapdoor rifle. The rear sight base is graduated from 100 to 500 yards, the leaf sight graduated out to 1100 yards. The range graduations are stamped on the right side of the sight base. The barrel has no front sight. The trigger guard has the rear sling swivel still attached. The trigger has a smooth surface. The iron butt plate is stamped US and does not have a trap door. There are no inspector or proof marks on the barrel. This early cut down trapdoor rifle shows plenty of wear from use, but is still very functional and displays well. The bore is clean with no pitting, but shows very little rifling left. The shortening of the barrel and stock to match was not performed at an arsenal. The barrel has not been crowned, the ramrod channel is still visible. I believe this is a conversion performed by native Americans and this became what I've heard called a "blanket" gun. it makes a great conversion piece and would go well with any Indian Wars collection.
