This is a Marlin XXX Standard 1872 five shot revolver in .30 caliber rimfire. Approximately 10,000 of these revolvers in three variations were manufactured by Marlin between 1873 and 1876. The serial number of 6649 puts this one being manufactured during the 1875-1876 period. The serial number is stamped on the inside of the left grip frame, on the inside of the grip and on the rear of the cylinder face. This little pocket pistol measures 7" in overall length, with a barrel length of 3". The top of the barrel is stamped "XXX Standard 1872". The left side of the round barrel is stamped "J M MARLIN NEW-HAVEN CT PAT JULY 1 1873". The sights are fixed. This 5 shot revolver has a spur trigger. The fluted cylinder is not stamped, but does have some simple engraving. The gun has been entirely nickel plated, save the hammer and spur trigger. Over 95% of the plating remains, enhancing the factory engraving. The ivory grips are in very good condition with no cracks. The mechanics of this little firearm have an issue, operating normally at times, then failing to index the cylinder at times. These small pistols were popular with gamblers, soldiers, outlaws and most everybody else who was in the Wild West during the Indian Wars period. This little shooter will make a fine addition to any firearms collection.
