Five Excavated Bullets Recovered at Fort Gibson, Oklahoma

This is an excavated 5 piece relic set recovered from Fort Gibson, Oklahoma. These items were recovered by a long time Indian territory relic hunter who recently passed away. The relics were recovered on private property with the land owners permission. The bullets are mounted on a wooden plaque that measures 5 1/4" by 3 3/8". The five dug bullets are epoxied to the plaque for display and include two .58 caliber minie bullets, one .58 caliber Williams Regulation bullet, one .52 caliber Sharps carbine bullet and one .52 caliber Spencer carbine bullet. Fort Gibson was established in 1824 in the Oklahoma Indian territory. When constructed, Fort Gibson was the furthest western military post in the United States. It was named for Colonel George Gibson, Commissary General of Subsistence. The fort remained active until 1888. Many notable officers were billeted there, to include Robert E. Lee, Zachary Taylor, Jefferson Davis and Stephen W. Kearny. In the 1930's the fort's buildings were reconstructed and in 1960 it was designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service. These recovered bullets are from the 1850's to 1860's time period.
