This is a copy of a Pattern 1853 Enfield type III rifle musket from the American Civil War. The overall length of this weapon is 44", with a barrel length of 29 3/4". I believe this gun was manufactured in England around the turn of the 20th century as a "boys" rifle. The exterior of the barrel is smooth, with very little to no pitting. The surface of the barrel that is exposed shows a light plum patina. The bore of the barrel is beginning to turn dark with virtually no pitting. There is no rifling visible, and I believe it has always been a smoothbore barrel. There are no proof marks visible on the barrel, but I have not removed the barrel to check underneath. A bore gauge shows this barrel to be .48 caliber. The original front sight is still present, but like so many original Enfields, the rear sight is missing. This barrel doesn't look to ever had one installed. The lockplate is not stamped or marked in any way. The action functions normally, the hammer holds at half cock and full cock. The patina of the lock matches the barrel. Both sling swivels are present, as well as the ramrod. The nose cap, both barrel bands, trigger guard and butt plate are brass and have a very eye pleasing light mustard patina. The stock is in good condition, having no stress cracks or major wood loss. The barrel and ramrod channels are still pretty crisp and sharp. There are no visible stamps or cartouches to be found on the stock. I have not found any information on this gun, but it sure is a cool little piece. This would look great displayed with your full sized Civil War longarms collection, or really cool being carried by your 10 year old at the next reenactment!
