This is a US Cavalry Officer's dress belt from the Indian Wars period circa 1875 -1890. The belt has a free length of 43 1/2" and a width of 1 3/4". It is constructed from a black enameled leather belt covered with a flat gold bullion strip of material. There are two raised gold bullion stripes on the backing material. A gold tinted thread is used to sewn the bullion material onto the leather. A post Civil War Model 1851 sword belt plate, as evidenced by the wide tongue, is used with this belt. This belt is set up with only one sewn on brass loop to be used with the M1881/1885 saber attachment. The leather is stamped THE PETTIBONE/MFG.CO./CIN.O on the belt "tongue" used to protect the uniform from the buckle. This belt rig is in overall good condition. There are a few spots where the stitching is broken where the bullion material joins the leather. The small added leather loop, used to again protect the uniform when the Model 1872 saber was worn on the belt, is broken where it joins the belt on one side. If you have an Indian Wars period Cavalry officer's frock or dress coat this belt will really raise the eye appeal!
