This is a Federal cap box manufactured during the American Civil War. The maker mark on the outer flap is of S.H. Young of Newark, New Jersey. Young had contracts for accoutrements during the Civil War, to include one on 1 February, 1865 for 10,000 sets of Infantry accoutrements. The stamp reads "S.H. YOUNG & CO/NEWARK/N.J". The leather on this pouch is a little dry, but still very pliable. The outer flap shows minor crazing along the top of flap. The stitching is still very strong and has no breaks. The brass finial is present, the closure tab is still reporting for duty and is 100% intact! The two belt loops are present and still strong enough to be worn on a belt. The wool and pick are no longer with the box! The little cap box still displays great, and would be a nice addition to any Civil War display.
