This is a Springfield Model 1863 type I .58 caliber rifled musket from the Civil War. Approximately 250000 of these were produced between 1864 and 1865. It was the last muzzle loading military rifle produced for military use by the Springfield armory. The type I saw the absence of the spring retained barrel bands, going to split type bands retained by screws. The rear sight used on the Type I was the standard two leaf sight, but this one has the Type II single leaf sight. The black walnut stock retains it's original finish and has no cracks, just a the normal dings and scratches associated with normal use and handling. There is one cartouche on the left flat of the stock opposite the lock plate. It is very faint, but it's an oval and looks to have the the magical letters ESA, for Erskine S Allin. All the metal hardware on this one are finished in "National Armory Bright", but have taken on a dark steel gray patina. The barrel has the V P eagle head proof marks on the left barrel flat at the breech. Stamped into the barrel below the proof marks in small letters is OHIO. The state must have purchased this weapon for it's National Guard after the war. The bolster and breech of the barrel show moderate pitting and pinpricking. The remainder of the barrel is smooth and has nice, even steel gray patina. The bore is dark and shows light rust along the entire length of the barrel. The rifling is no longer visible, with the bore gauging at .63 caliber. The tulip straight shank ramrod is still present. The lock plate is stamped US SPRINGFIELD with an Eagle to the left and 1864 on a slant behind the type II hammer. The improved bolster without the clean out screw no longer has a visible Eagle. The mechanics of the lock are still very strong, and lock the hammer in the half and full cock position. The barrel bands are split and are retained by screws and all three are stamped with a small U. The butt plate tang is stamped with US and has taken on a dark brown patina. Here is an opportunity to own a solid late war gun that won't break the bank.
