This is a gun made up of parts from the Civil War and Indian Wars period. It is an excellent candidate for the reenactor in the family, or a worthy project for the fixer up man in the family! This one is made up of a Springfield Model 1863 type II stock, a Pattern 1853 Enfield .58 caliber barrel, an 1877 or later Springfield trapdoor lock with 1863 Springfield hammer and an unmarked iron butt plate. The Springfield type II stock saw the return of the spring retained barrel bands. All three bands are present and stamped with a U. The middle barrel band has the sling swivel stud ground off. The forward and middle barrel band retaining springs are missing. The stock has been spliced at the middle barrel band, and is held in place by the barrel bands. There are no cartouches on the left stock flat, or any other markings on the stock. The iron nose cap is held in place by the ramrod. The ramrod itself has been repaired at the rammer end, and is missing the threaded section. The barrel has a nice even steel gray patina mixed with some plum. The rear sight is missing, pretty common on Enfield barrels. The barrel tang screw is also missing. The Birmingham proof marks of a crown over script BP, 24, crossed scepters with a crown in the top quadrant and the letter v in the bottom quadrant, 24 and crossed scepters with a crown in the top quadrant and the letters BPC in the lower quadrants are clearly visible. The bore is dark, rusty and shows no visible rifling, with the bore gauging out at .60 caliber. The lock plate is stamped US SPRINGFIELD with an Eagle to the left ahead of the hammer. There is no date on the flat lock. The mechanics of the lock are still very strong, and lock the hammer in the half and full cock position. However, when the trigger is depressed the hammer does not fall. The butt plate is iron and there is no US stamped on the tang. While this one certainly won't earn a spot in a top rated Civil War collection, it can still provide plenty of enjoyment for the young reenactor in the family.
