This is a cutdown 12 gauge double barrel shotgun made by Alexander McComas of Baltimore, Maryland during the civil war period. McComas was known for his custom made waterfowl guns used around the Chesapeake Bay area from 1843 to 1889. From 1843 to 1884 his business was located at 51 Calvert St, Baltimore, Maryland. The shotgun has an overall length of 39 1/2". The barrels are 24 1/4" and gauge out just a shade over 12. The bores are dark and pitted, but the exterior of the barrels display great. The metal has taken on a dark, "attic black" patina. The top barrel rib has been engraved with "Alexander McComas No. 51 Calvert St. Baltimore Maryland". There is a slight bulge in the left barrel 1 3/4" from the muzzle. The bottom of the barrels are stamped with Birmingham proof marks. McComas was known to have been a gun maker and importer of firearms, ammunition and other related goods. So he either imported the shotgun and marked them with his own name, or imported the barrels and made the rest of the gun. The right lock has some issues. The hammer will hold in half and full cock, but will not fall when the trigger is depressed. The left lock functions normally. Both lock plates are stamped Alexander McComas and are devoid of any etchings. The lock plates and hammers have a tab bit lighter patina than the barrels. The trigger guard and butt plate have both taken on the same dark patina as the barrels. The stock is in overall good condition with just the usual bumps and dings. It to has the look of coming right out of the attic. The checkering on the forearm and wrist area are practically worn off. The flaws are where McComas' decorative shield had been installed behind the barrel tang and is now missing. The escutcheon plates are also missing from both sides. Last but not least the ram rod is also missing. This is a nice example of a Civil War period shotgun that was made and retailed in Baltimore, Maryland.
