This is a percussion, half stock, heavy barreled target rifle made by Andrew Buckham of Delhi, New York, a gunsmith from 1859 to 1874. It has an overall length of 50", with a barrel length of 34 1/4". The exterior of the barrel has a smooth surface with light pitting scattered about. It has a steel gray patina with traces of original finish showing. The bore gages out at .54 caliber and is still bright with no pitting and good rifling. The barrel is stamped on the top barrel flat A BUCKHAM over DELHI N-Y/27/WARRANTED/CAST STEEL. The octagon barrel is fitted with an adjustable hooded blade front sight, an adjustable buckhorn style rear sight set 7 1/2" forward of the breech and a screw in peep sight on the barrel tang. The first 1/2 " of the barrel has been turned to accommodate a bullet starter. The lock plate is not stamped with a name. The barrel is retained by a single escutcheon and two tang screws. The ramrod pipes are secured to the bottom of the barrel. The ramrod is missing in action. The mechanics of the lock do not work, the hammer will not hold in the cocked position. The double triggers work perfectly. The lock has some simple engraving applied to it. The butt plate, trigger guard and the shark shaped side plate are all brass and have a beautiful golden patina. The escutcheon plates are German silver. The half stock shows plenty of use, but is in very good condition. The barrel channels are still very crisp, no wood loss anywhere on the stock and only a small crack at the bottom of the butt on the right side. This is a very nice example of a mid 1800's target rifle that, with just a little lock work, could be a great shooter today!
