This is United States Navy fuse pouch from the Civil War era. The leather is in very good condition, remaining supple and having no damage at all. The embossed USN within an oval is very crisp and distinct. There are no makers mark or inspectors stamp on the pouch. These pouches were worn on the belt of the naval crewmen of the gun and contained the paper time fuses used to detonate the shell. The single wide loop is still present, but the stitching is completely gone when it was sewn to the lower section of the pouch. Approximately half of the stitching is gone from the flap of the pouch. The brass closure finial is present, as well as the closure tab. The closure tab looks to have been resewn at some point. This is a unique piece of military history that would make a nice addition to your Naval collection.
