This is a full stock percussion long rifle from the mid 1800's. This rifle measures 52 3/4" in length with a 37 1/4" octagon barrel. The barrel has an untouched dark patina with a smooth surface and very light pitting scattered along the length of the barrel. The barrel is retained to the stock by iron pins and a single tang screw. The bore is .45 caliber and is dark, but is not pitted and shows very strong rifling. The rear buck horn style sight is forged onto the barrel 8" forward of the breech. The front sight is a German silver blade design dovetailed into the barrel. There are no stamps or markings of any kind on the barrel. The barrel has not been removed from the stock to check for any stamps on the bottom. The three brass ramrod thimbles are securely attached to the stock using iron pins. The lock plate is marked, but is not fully legible. The last three letters within a banner are LLE, along with floral designs and a single line around the perimeter of the lock. The mechanics of the lock work perfectly. The trigger and set trigger are present, and work just like they did when new. The trigger guard, butt plate, nose cap and ram rod thimbles are made of brass. The trigger guard and butt plate have a matching golden patina, while the thimbles and nose cap appear to have been cleaned at some point. They are beginning to obtain that aged appearance again. The barrel and lock have a matching dark patina. The stock is a light brown color, and has been striped to give the appearance of curly maple. There is a small sliver of wood missing along the right side barrel channel just forward of the nipple. With the exception of the wood loss on the right side barrel channel, the barrel channel edges are crisp. The stock has been spliced just forward of the middle ramrod thimble. The repair has been executed quite well, and not noticeable until close examination of the gun. No doubt this was done to repair an old break in the stock, just not sure how long ago this was done. This old long rifle has been around since the mid 1800's, and has managed to survive intact and functional. It would be a nice addition to any long rifle collection.
