This is an import Model 1850 Foot Officers sword from the Civil War. The sword measures 37 1/4" overall, with a 31 3/4" blade that measures 1 1/8" wide at the hilt. The blade has a stopped fuller that runs 22" long, and a false edge that measures 16" in length. The edge has no nicks or dings. The blade has a bright, polished appearance that you can shave in! Both sides of the blade have etchings that are still pretty frosty and very legible. The center of the blade on the obverse side has a spread winged eagle clutching a banner in it talons etched on it, surrounded by floral designs. Etched on the banner are the words E PLUMIBUS ENUM. The obverse ricasso has a small brass disc inset with the word PROOF stamped on it. The reverse side of the blade has the letters US surrounded by more floral designs etched in the center. The reverse ricasso is blank, no stamps or etchings. The leather washer is still reporting for duty! The brass hilt has an aged, mellow golden patina. The hilt is very tight to the blade, having no deflection at all. The pommel cap is secure on the tang, the peen looks to have never been disturbed. The wooden grip is still covered in the original marine wrap, and it shows minimal wear from use. The double strand wire is still very tight to the grip. The leather scabbard is still very strong. There is no crazing, and very little loss of color on the leather. Overall the scabbard is in very good condition. The stitching remains tight and unbroken. The mounts are tight on the scabbard, and both have the retaining screws. The drag also has the retaining screw and remains tight on the scabbard as well. This is an excellent example of an imported Model 1850 Foot Officer's sword that shows enough wear to have seen the elephant, but is still displays like a museum piece!
